so
is the motto of the Third International Benedictine Youth Conference
(TYBIC),
which will be held between 11th and 15th August, 2005, in Königsmünster
Abbey, Meschede.
Following the Conferences held at the abbeys of Münsterschwarzach
(Franken, Germany), 2001, and
Woodside (San Francisco, USA),
2004, students of Benedictine and Cistercian schools from all over the
world will gather in Sauerland, experience community according to the
tradition of St. Benedict, and finally make their way together to Cologne
to celebrate World Youth Day (WYD). The Conferences are promoted by
the International Commission on Benedictine Education.

The idea
of combining this event with that of World Youth Day came from the president
of the Conference, Abbot Christopher of England's Worth
Abbey. His priority is to give students from poor countries
the possibility to participate in both meetings, namely the Benedictine
conference and World Youth Day. In both of these events, community is
a central element to be experienced; an element that is also characteristic
to being a member of a Benedictine school, and to education according
to the tradition of St. Benedict. This characteristic will also be an
important aspect of World Youth Day in Cologne. Our monastery will host
a spiritual centre for the TYBIC.
Here, you can expect to find:
- Benedictine
hospitality
- a
place of encounter with God, of silence and of prayer
-
the possibility to speak to the Brothers and the Sisters
- the
possibility to get to know Benedictine Youth from other parts of the
world
-
information concerning education and formation in Benedictine schools.
In addition to this invitation of ours, there will be an international
gathering of young Benedictine and Cistercian Monks and Nuns in the
church of Groß St. Martin, a gathering that will also act as a
spiritual centre in which the liturgy of the Hours will be prayed. A
night of prayer in common, led by students and religious from all over
the world will bring together both centres.
So far, participants range from USA, Tanzania, South Korea, Great Britain,
Philippines, Chile and, of course, Germany.
